The Athlete of the Month for May is Tori Smith. She was chosen not only for her athletic abilities but also her outstanding citizenship and academic achievements. Tori Smith currently plays on the Avalanche Premier 96 Black team, she plays Striker/Forward for them. Her soccer playing experience includes 3 years with Sandy Recreation and 4 years with Avalanche Soccer Club. Tori's coach commented that "Tori is an outstanding soccer player. She is a leader among her teammates, with definite captain potential. She has the ability to score goals as well as set her teammates up for goals. She is tenacious on the soccer field, giving all her effort in every game. She is respected among her peers, and displays confidence and class on and off the field. She has been a great contributor to the success of this team. Tori is a very composed player, seeing the field and making great plays throughout the game. She has great work ethic, which inspires and motivates those around her. The sky is the limit for Tori! - Coach Kevin Vander Veur. Her favorite soccer teams to watch are the US Women's National Team & Brazil Women's Team. Tori's most memorable soccer experience was having Mia Hamm call to wish her good luck at Regionals in Hawaii 2008 and going to ODP region camp with all her ODP teammates! Tori's favorite movie is "Stick It", her favorite book is "The Secret Journal of Brett Colton", and she enjoys going to Starbucks and having their Double Chocolate Frappuccino! Tori enjoys performing in musical theater and has been in various plays at the Sandy Amphitheater and most recently played Dorothy in her middle school musical, "The Wiz". She also enjoys dance, piano, basketball, and volleyball. Tori understands the value of taking time to serve others and enjoys making a difference in someone's life by helping them with their needs or simply just taking time to sit and listen. She is the Young Women's Organization Beehive President in her ward and is involved in many service projects throughout the year including: visiting the elderly, Sub-for-Santa, cleaning homes and weeding yards, working at the church farm, working at the humanitarian center, participating in food drives, and tending children. Tori has been a 4.0 honor student every academic year. Her grades are very important to her and she never passes on extra credit work. She is an E.S.P (Extra Special Patriot) student at Eastmont Middle School awarded for excellence in all academic areas and citizenship. Congratulations to Tori for winning this award. The athlete of the month receives a 6 week training program from TOSH to improve speed, power, and agility. TOSH is a proud sponsor of Utah Youth Soccer Association. |
