June 2009
The Athlete of the Month for June is Andy Christensen. He was chosen not only for his athletic abilities but also his outstanding citizenship and academic achievements. Andy currently plays on the Blue Knights Premier U-16 team, he plays Striker for them. His soccer playing experience started with Murray Max at on a U-8 team. He then transferred to the Blue Knights at U-10 where he has played ever since. He has played in many tournaments in many different states including Utah, San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, Boise, Lancaster, and at the National Championships last summer in Virginia Beach. Andy's coach commented that "Andy is a great player, but he is a better person. While he is a consistent scoring threat, (he led the premier league in scoring one year), his real gift is for finding open team-mates with precision passing. He is a very unselfish player. He is a good listener and very intelligent on the field. He is not loud, but is a quiet leader through example. He has spent many long hours practicing on his own to develop a great touch on the ball and excellent food skills." His favorite soccer teams to watch are Liverpool and Chelsea in the English Premier League. Andy's most memorable soccer experience was the 2009 State Cup Championship game when his team the Blue Knights played against a great team, defending champion Sparta, in a very competitive game. Near the end of the game with the score tied, he did a bicycle kick to an open teammate who was able to get the game winning goal. His favorite movie is "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy", his favorite book is "A Tale of Two Cities", and he enjoys eating Pizza! Andy enjoys participating in High School Soccer, he has played in every varsity game during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He is an Eagle Scout and enjoys canyoneering. He also enjoys all other sports, dating, hiking, traveling, and reading. He also loves the beach! Andy has served as a volunteer working with the elderly and shut-ins in his area. He spearheaded a collection drive of bedding for the Road Home Shelter collecting over 100 items. He also has volunteered at various soccer camps for the youth. Andy served on the Student Body as Vice President for his 8th and 9th grade years at Hillcrest Jr. High. He carried a 4.0 GPA for all three years of Jr. High. In high school he has continued academic excellence maintaining a 4.0 with honors classes. Congratulations to Andy for winning this award.
