April 18, 2009 University of Utah's U-FIT program to provide a TOPSoccer Clinic TOPSoccer is "The Outreach Program for Soccer". Our goal in TOPSoccer is to provide an opportunity for ALL CHILDREN to play soccer. Some children will not join soccer teams because they are physically disabled; have a learning disability or because of the administrative challenges. Through TOPSoccer UYSA is able to provide the opportunity for every child to play soccer. Players are coached by professionally trained coaches, taught skills, drills, the game of soccer, how to play as a team and have fun. TOPSoocer is rewarding to everyone who participates whether they are coaches, volunteers, buddies, child participants or parents. TOPSoccer is unique in that children are placed on teams by ability (not age), games may be freely modified, FIFA "Laws" are only guidelines, Non-players may be on the field, Rules may be adjusted and Administrative procedures may be revised to fit the needs of every child who wants to play the game of soccer. When Children begin playing soccer in the TOPSoccer program they begin with basic developmental soccer skills without the competitive edge. However, the ultimate goal is to have enough children playing soccer in the TOPSoccer program to play side by side at State Cup, President's Cup and other Tournaments around the State. We have already received invitations to play in TOPSoccer tournaments in other states in our region. TOPSoccer creates a noncompetitive atmosphere in which the ability of each child is catered. This allows every child to realize their individual, physical potential in a positive and supportive atmosphere. Each child is paired up with a trained volunteer "BUDDY" for companionship and motivational support throughout each day or evening of activities.
"I believe the TOPSoccer program is a wonderful addition to our UYSA soccer family and in our community. I have been the UYSA, TOPSoccer Chair since spring 2009. Through hard work and dedication I have been able to grow the program from about 60 participants to approximately 150+ current active participants from Logan down to Provo. I am working hard to get the TOPSoccer program better developed around the Salt Lake Area. I am also anxious to get the TOPSoccer program developed across the state of Utah and I hope to have the same success as I experienced with the growth I was able to produce during my tenure as the U-FIT Program Coordinator from 2006-2008. By reaching out to our communities, UYSA, Real Salt Lake, soccer clubs and local universities I believe that we can provide every child with the opportunity to play the game of soccer, because I truly believe that Soccer is the Game for People of ALL Abilities" Sarah W.
